This practice belongs to all of us. You can do it on your own at home; however it’s worth your while to assess the safety of using this practice in your current circumstances.

  • Rule out the following contraindications prior to steaming:

    • Are you pregnant and intending to stay pregnant? A DIY Steam set-up is not for you; consult with a midwife or peristeam hydrotherapist who can advise

    • Are you trying to conceive and post-ovulation? Steaming is not for you.

    • Do you have an active infection characterized as a burning itch? Adding more heat (through steaming) is not recommended

    • Have you had tubal coagulation? Steaming can undo this and may not be for you.

    • Do you have a birth control arm implant? Steaming may not be for you.

    • Have you had a uterine ablation? Steaming can undo this and may not be for you.

    • Do you have a permanently implanted (not the IUD) sterilization device? Steaming is not for you.

  • This DIY guide offers a way to begin steaming without any fancy equipment like steam stools (as great as those can be once you’ve decided to cultivate the practice). All you need is a chair and a cooking pot.

  • You can start steaming with Apple Cider Vinegar, a safe option for most people (as long as you’ve ruled out contraindications outlined under “Safety” above). Other herb recommendations can be found here (click)..
